This work examines the woman in William Shakespeare's Othello and The Merchant of Venice.Through the characters of Desdemona,Emilia and Bianca in Othello and the Characters of Portia,Nerissa and Jessica in The Merchant of Venice,this study explores the hypothesis that in both plays,Shakespeare presents female characters who do not strictly follow the standards set by the patriarchal society.By using the Feminist Approach,this study explores the way in which shakespeare's women challenge the traditional norms of the Elizabeth society.<br/>Trough a comparison of the female characters in Othello and thhose in The Merchant of Venice,this study discusses the implication of the rebellious attitude shown by the women in these two plays.This work concludes that William Shakspeare created strong female characters and shows how powerfull women can be even when they are oppossed by a patriarchal and patrilineal society. |
