Résumé,

This work examines traditional and social norms that put an African woman into the fix from which she struggles to get out as she tries to define herself and satisfy patriarchy at the same time as seen in Yvonne Vera's Under the Tongue.
The work shows that conscientization, determination, self-assertion, and unity among women are inevitable tools to achieve independence .
Constructed on the background of feminist approach, this work settles on the note that traditional normas and social problems are a handicap to women's emancipation, and freedom is not given but worn. Despite the effort made, to liberate themselves, women undergo severe consequences during this struggle.
This work concludes that there is no fight without loss or consequences.
