Communicating in more then one language is a way of life. This requires all the personal efforts as one struggles to reach the limits of the first language and succeeds to communicate in a new language, which requires also a new culture, a new way of living, thinking and acting. To send and receive successfully messages in a second language requires total engagement both intellectually and emotionally.

Nevertheless, second language learning is not an easy lask. It is affected by some factors such as the environment in which the learner is. And this environment depends on factors which are external and internal.

If we consider the above statement, we can see that culture is a sort of behavior, and mode of perception. English has been introduced in Burundi education from standard 1 of primary school. For this reason, though English was laught as foreign language from the second year of secondary education until recently in Burundi, we have realized that in the Second Form Arts Section, learners still have many problems of expressing themselves freely in Englsih. A big gag is realized between the students' competence and performance.

In conclusion, there still is a big challenge for students to improve their English. However, there are opportunities of using English but learners do not care about them. These are to participate in English clubs, to chat with classmates during breaks, listening to radio, to name but a few. Another problem is that students do not spend much effort to take advantages of these opportunities to improve vocabulary and pronunciation. Some recommendations were made focusing on the fact that speaking English or oral performance is influenced b the settings and culture.
