This work titled "The Search for Freedom and Identity in Frederick Douglass' The Heroïc Slave" examines the slaves' experiences in white plantations of America. It aims at depicting the horrors of slavery and highlighting the bravery of slaves in the search for their freedom and identity. Written against the background of Marxist and Psychoanalysis theories, this work concludes that self awakening anong slaves pushes them to stand up and resist. In this way, rebellion, courage and determination can be important ways for a successful search for freedom and identity. This work is therefore based on the assumption that in a society of oppression like slavery, the deliverance of the oppressed is in their own hands. However, the process of one's search for freedom and identity requires resistance and determination. In other words, freedom is won and not given.
