RÉSUME,

Language is an important tool for communication. The former is used in many ways: to convey wishes and commands, to tell truths and lies, to influence our audience, to vent our emotions and to formulate ideas. This could not probably be possible if there was no language to embody them.

The learning of a language is of paramount importance for human beings because wherever people are gathered, they need to exchange their throughts and ideas. Because of cross-border interactions, foregn languages are learned and this activity has mary handicaps. I felt the need to assess a number of factors that affect the learning of the speaking skill in English.

Three hypotheses were posited as guidelines. They consisted of knowing whether the methods used to teach the speaking skill are adequate to cover pupils' oral needs; if the teaching materials are available and adequate to cover pupls' oral needs, and finally if teachers are well -equipped to meet pupils'expectation in the speaking skill. The researcher chose this topic also because a diversity of studies has been undertaken in this area but pupils still have, even today, some problems in oral expression.
The study focuses on some factors hampering the learning of Engish in some secondary private scools in Gitega city.
