This study was conducted to identify Factors Hindering Students' Speaking performance in English in First Form Arts of Gikungu, Gasenyi, Kamenge and Kinama's Saint Familhy Municipal High Schools in Ntahangwa Commune of Bujumbura Municipality. The quantitative and qualitative methods and quota sampling were used to achieve this goal. The participants were four teachers and 80 students. Questionnaires for students and for teachers, and classroom observation check-lists were employed for data collection. The data collected through questionnaires were described using frequencies and percentages while data collected through interview and classroom observation were analyzed qualitatively and data from all sources were used to increase reliability of the findings. The results showed that the students did not practice speaking skills both in and outside classroom due to : lack of motivation, fear of making mistakes, lack of self-confidence, poor grammar knowledge,shortage of vocabulary, all these resulting from lack of usage of effective methods and techniques, and helpful teaching materials as far as speaking is concerned. In order to overcome such a situation, teachers are recommended to make use of not only activities that involve students in speaking but also useful teaching materials so as to enable students be proficient speakers of English.
