RESUME,

This study investigated the factors hindering the teaching and learning of the English language in basic schools.It dealt with the factors hindering the two activities.It main purpose was to check the factors hampering the teaching and learning of English.The required qualification for teachers,adequate teaching materials,motivation and prerequisites for learners are more crucial for better achievement for the two tasks.Data were collected using classroom observation guide,pupils' questionnaire and teachers' questionnaire.The study was carried with 208 respondents,that is 195 pupils and 13 teachers of selected public schools in Mutaho Commune.Findings revealed that the large number of teachers in grade 8 do not have the qualification because many of them hold D7 Diploma.Them,they are untrained to teach English.Concerning teaching materials,findings revealed that adequate teaching materials are missing since we know that they are of geat importance.At last,it was revealed that pupils in grade 8 present a significant lack of prerequisites for a better learning of English because before grade 8,i.e 1st grade till 7th they have not been taught by qualified and trained teachers.Therefore.There is need for promoting the teaching and learning processes.
