RESUME,

This work aims at investigating the problems encountered by English learners in reading comprehension activities at the junior level of secondary schools in Burundi. This study was conducted in Mutimbuzi commune Where five schools were selected.Data from pupils and English teachers at the junior Level were collected by the use of questionnaires designed to seek information about th emain problems encountered by pupils and teachers in reading comprehension.Classroom observation was also used to investigate the relity in those areas of research.Through this research,it was found out that the perfomance of English at required levels cannot be achieved because of the problem that English learners and teachers encounter in the learning and teaching process at the junior level especially in reading comprehension.Tne main ^problems are precariousness of materials, insufficient time allotted to English lessons, lack of books for reading in and out side the classroom and finally the lack of libraries at schools.A general conclusion was drawn and some recommendations were formulated by the researcher in an attempt to find some solutions to the problem analysed.
