The work analyses the reasons behind the tragic denouement in the play. Through the use of the new Historicism and psychoanalytic approaches the study explores Virtue and Vice in Othello by establishing relationships between Elizabethan society and the characters depicted in Othello as well as the influence of the authorship of William Shakespeare so as to draw limitations of the social standards of morality. This work is based on the hypothesis that the conflict between Virtue and Vice in Shakespearz's Othello results in the tragic incidents that characterise the play. In the findings, this work points out that Virtue is superior to vice. The study concludes that the consequences of the conflict between virtue and vice affect both characters in Othello and Society ER -
