It sets out to investigate how linguistic environment can hinder the Burundi secondary school learners' mastery of English. This study was intended to answer a number of question of questions that guided thr research. To get answers to those questions, classroom observation as well as both pupils' and teachers' questionnaires were used. This was done with the intention of finding solutions to the problems encountered in the learning of English language in Burundi secondary schools, particularly in the First Form Arts. The study was carried out in 5 schools in Gitega city. Informants were selected using the simple random sampling technique to avoid that none of them felt excluded. Result revealed that the major handicap to the development of the speaking skill learning is the lack of English speaking communities; that English courses given to Burundian learners cannot lead them to the full mastery of spoken English; and finally, the classroom setting does not succed to offer the pupils the opportunities to speak English. Conclusion and recommendations were draw and formulated in the light of the research findings ER -
