RESUME,

This study aims at assessing the factors that negatively affect the teaching and learning of the English reading skill in Fundamental Education in general and in 9 th grade in particular.It is generally based on the fact that in large size classes,pupils have a negative attitude towards the teaching and learning of the reading skill,lack of enough teachers and teaching reading materials and also the methodology used by teachers when teaching do not facilitate students' reading activies.In order to assess some factors,written questionnaire,reading test and class observation were the instruments used to collect data from respondents of selected schools in Mugongo-Manga commune,The analysis of data,after being put together and interpreted ,revealed that the factors are just the same in all those selected schools.It has been discovered that pupils in large size classes seem not to be interested in reading and thus become lazy,bored and some make noise during reading lesson,insufficient number of teachers,teaching reading materials and the methodology used by teachers affect negatively the reading skill.To solve these problrms,some recommendations were directed to different parteners who are involved in teachind and learningprocess namely students,teachers,the Burundi government represented here by the ministry of education and the coming researchers.
