In fact it is obvious that the kind of english taught in engineering departments is so far from matching the students' needs. Therefore, this works attempts to suggest some guidelines that can be followed in the purpose of designing an adequate syllabus. In carrying out this research, some procedures were used: data were collected on the basis of filling both students and lecturer's questionnaires in all the dsepartment of the Factulty of Engineering sciences at the university of Burundi. The sample method used the random sampling technique. At the end of the research, the result reveal the following major problem. The program that engineering students study is so far from matching students' expectations and the respective departments' aims. As consequence, it hampers both students and lecturers from achieving their goals.
