This study on the " Environmental challenges to the development of the speaking skill: A study conducted in selected schools of Nyamurenza and Gashikanwa communes, case of the 9 th  class of the basic school" aimsat exploring the aspects of the environment that hamper pupils' development of the speaking skill in Burundi rural schools. this work sets out to test the following research hypotheses: (1) the school location has effects on the learning of the speaking skill of the pupils, 
(2 ) Burundi rural environment is a big handicap to pupils to master the English language skills in their language learning process, 
(3) the lack of English teaching and learning materials and competent  teachers hampers a lot in the development of the speaking skill of learnings. The research questions got answers thanks to questionnaires that were  administered to pupils and teachers, and the classroom observations made. As informants sampled, 60 pupils out of 318, and 6 teachers were selected. The research findings proved that the pupils' environment has an impact on their mastery of the speaking skill in English and showed that the working conditions, the linguistic environment of pupils and teacher unavailability are among the most important environmentalchallenges. From those findings, a general conclusion was drawn and some recommendations were addressed to partners involved in education.</subfield>
