This work examines traditional norms regulating the place of a woman in the society and shows how the female heroine in Efuru challenges these norms and forges her place in the community through  social activities such as organising the family without the man's guidance and helping needy people thanks to her successful trade.The study explores what traditional Igbo society expects of a woman as a daughter and a house wife.Through the character of Efuru,we examine the difficulties the woman faces in an attempt to break some of the rules laid down by indulging into income generating activities and how she uses the proceeds from her business to help the needy around her.Focusing our argument on Flora Nwapa's Efuru,this study is based on the hypothetical assumption that self-assertion,determination,and  economic independence are keys to female liberation.Written against the background of the feminist theory,this work concludes that the quest for emancipation,and liberation from traditional set ups,demands economic self-sufficiency for the woman and her involvement in community building as it is the case with Efuru.
