This work examines gender roles in the importance of being earnest.It explores the different roles that are attributed to individuals in society and justifies the fact that these roles are assigned or performed based on gender consiousness.Male characters like Lord Bracknell,jack Worthing,Algerno Moncrieff and Dr.Chasuble adopt careless and passive attitudes in the play and therefore are treated as effeminate by those around them.On the other hand,female characters like Lady Bracknell,Cecily Cardew,Guendolen and Miss prism by occupying dominative,powerful and authoritative attitudes through their relationships have been attributed masculine qualities by Oscar Wilde.This work intends to prove that gender in the importance of being Earnest is not a biological,but performative role.Written against the background of the feminist approaches,this study concludes that Wilde's satire on gender helps to expose the moral decadence in victorian England.Within this same profile,this study exposes the extent to which Oscar Wilde pictures the image of both men and women while reversing the roles of their gender
