The idea to assess the English speaking skill stemmed from our strong desire to improve its teaching throughout Burundi public secondary school. The teaching of a foreign language susch as english a country like Burundi should indeed raise a number of questions: 1. Do teachers' methods or technique learners'to communicate competentl in spoken English? 2. Do teachers use recorded materials to teach English in secondary school? 3. Is the time given to learns to practice oral communicative activities sufficient enough? To find answers to those questions, two instruments were used:clasroom observation and written questionnaires. This work is made up of five chapters: General Introduction;Literature Review;Methodology;Data Presentation,Analysis and Findings and General Conclusion. The findings from this work have shown that the teachers' methods do not encourage learners to communicate competently in spoken E,glish;teachers do not use recorded materials to teach English and the time given to learners to prictice oral communicative activities is not sufficient enough. At the end of our research,we realized that the best success of learners in a given activity such as speaking skill depends up on the teaching methods, teaching materials and the time given to learners to practice that skill. 72BI-BuBUaAnglais (Langue)xExpression oralexEnseignement secondaire public 72BI-BuBUaMémoire1 4dir.aNkurikiye Sylvestre aUniversity of BurundibFaculty of Arts and Social Sciences
