Naturalisme (thème) KW - Mémoire N2 - Résumé, This work examines Naturalism in Stephen Crane's short stories "An Expériment in Misery" and "Death and the Child". It analyses how the universe influences man's life, with a particular stress on the hostility of the universe to man. In this regard, the work is based on the hypothesis that human beings are driven by hereditary and environmental forces which are often hostile to them and that man's life is determined and conditioned by two forces. In the two stories stated above characters are influenced by environment and biology. It is in this light that the psychoanalytic approach has been employed to show how Crane's characters are motivated by instinctive drives in an environment that is hostile. The work concludes that man is victim of both environmental and hereditary forces. ER -
