Our study traces the behavior adopted by slaveholders towards slaves. Douglass presents two kinds of slaveholders : religious slaveholders and irreligious slaveholders. The analysis carried out through this work clearly shows Douglass' attitude towards slaveholders. Like the author himself, slaves suffered from the ill-treatment from their slaveholders. It equally examines the behavior adopted by slaves in the response of their slaveholders'attitude. Written against the background of psychoanalytic theoretical framework, this work stands on the hypothetical contention that slaveholders were not the same - religious slaveholders were harsher than irreligious ones. This can be explained from the fact that religious slaveholders used the Bible to justify their barbaric actions ER -
