The target population of this study comprises the 4th form pupils and teachers of he same class. Forty eight pupils and four teachers are treated as objects of the study and four schools were selected. The instruments used to gather the data are questionnaires and classroom observation. The answers to the specific questions are analysed separately so as to come up with answers to my mresearch question such as : Does the qulification of the teachers have an effect on pupils speaking skill ? Is the pupils' speaking skill hindered by their parents' socioeconomic background ? Does the pupils' attitude towards the English language have an effect on their English skill ? Ather analysing the data gathered. I found that the teachers' qualification and the pupils' attitude have no significant relationship with pupils' speaking skill while the parents' socioeconomic background has an influence on pupils speaking skill. As a result of these findings. I recommended first of all the teachers of English to use techniques or activities that promote the speaking skill, secondary pupils themselves should engage in conversation in classroom and outside the classroom and finally the government should create good conditions for English language learning by providing adequate and appropriate teaching materials. 72BI-BuBUaAnglais(langue).Enseignement secondaire public.zCankuzo(province).9113988 vMémoire91142701 4drtaNgendakumana,Emmanuel91139901 4drtaUniversity of BurundibFaculty of Arts and Social Sciences, department of english language and literature9113991 2udccBK c34871d34871
